I wasn’t ready for how much I needed “The Distance That Held Us” until I pressed play. Julia Thomsen, Marie Kenniff, and Hollie Kenniff just released this collaboration through Nettwerk Music Group, and it showed up at exactly the right moment.
The way this piece starts really gets you. There’s this building energy that pulls you in, and just when you think it’s going to overwhelm, it gently brings you back down. That contrast hits different. What follows is this beautifully calm atmosphere that honestly made me forget I had six browser tabs open and a to do list screaming at me.
They’ve woven in these natural sounds throughout the track that make you feel like you’re somewhere far away from everything. It’s subtle enough that it doesn’t feel gimmicky, but noticeable enough to transport you somewhere else entirely.
The strings here are gorgeous. They move through the whole composition with this warmth that’s hard to describe. Pair that with soft piano melodies and these ambient layers underneath, and you’ve got something that completely pulls you under. I found myself closing my eyes and just letting it wash over me.
What Julia, Marie and Hollie created together feels expansive but also strangely intimate. If you need to escape from the constant noise and overstimulation of everything right now, this track gives you that permission. It’s out now and available everywhere you stream music. Don’t sleep on this one.
