On a Day Like Today — Julia Thomsen, Hollie Kenniff & Marie

Julia Thomsen

Some collaborations make you wonder how the people involved ever worked separately.

“On a Day Like Today” brings together composer Julia Thomsen, singer and songwriter Hollie Kenniff, and producer and sound designer Marie under Nettwerk Music Group, and the three of them have created something that feels completely whole. Nothing about it sounds like a compromise or a handover between three different creative visions. It sounds like one thing, made with one purpose.

That purpose is straightforward and genuinely useful. This is music built for the moments when the day has gotten too loud and you need somewhere to put yourself for a while. It does that job without making a fuss about it.

Hollie Kenniff’s vocals sit in that particular register she does so well, layered and soft, floating above the instrumental bed rather than cutting through it. Her voice doesn’t demand to be the centre of attention, which is exactly right for a track like this. Julia’s compositional framework gives the whole piece its shape and direction, while Marie’s production and sound design fill in the edges in ways you feel more than consciously notice. The detail is there if you go looking, but it never intrudes.

What I keep coming back to is how easy it is to fall into this track. I’ve had it on while working, while winding down, and once just sitting quietly doing nothing at all, and it suited all three. That kind of flexibility is harder to achieve than it sounds. Most music pulls you somewhere specific. “On a Day Like Today” simply makes wherever you already are feel a little more manageable.
