“My Heart” seems to explore themes of loneliness and uncertainty. Can you share what personal experiences shaped its creation?
My wife died in 2017. This song explores the guilt and fears I had when I started dating again, and having feelings for other women.
You’ve been building a strong presence in the folk scene with tracks like “Pick up the Phone” and “Chase The Moon.” How do you feel “My Heart” differs from your previous work?
Of course, every song is different in terms of melody and lyrics. I liked introducing a new element – the more rocky ending in “My Heart”. It keeps fans on their toes and makes listening more interesting.
The final moments of “My Heart” feature an explosive guitar solo and indie-rock vibe. Was this shift in tone something you planned from the beginning, or did it evolve during the recording process?
This wasn’t planned from the beginning. My producer, Aeron Z Jones, suggested it after we had recorded lead/backing vocals and acoustic guitar. He played the solo and I loved it. Subsequently, I added some “oohs” over it. I tend to give Aeron space to be creative on each song we work on together.
With “My Heart” set to release on September 9th, what do you hope listeners take away from this single, and how does it fit into the larger narrative of your music career?
I hope listeners see a progression and feel a little surprised with each song. I released my debut album in December 23 and I hope to release my second album late this or early next year. I’ll be releasing a few more singles before then. I already have some songs ready for album 3!
